"This work is not intended as a treatise on elementary Geology, with Theological applications, nor as an attempt to establish a scheme of reconciliation between Geology and the Bible. It is the result of a series of exegetical studies of the first chapter of Genesis, in connection with the numerous incidental references to nature and creation in other parts of the Holy Scriptures. These studies were undertaken primarily for the private information of the author; and are now published as affording the best answer which he can give to the numerous questions on this subject addressed to him in his capacity of a teacher of Geology." - from the Preface. Dawson, who taught at McGill, divided his book into such subjects as: objects, character and authority of the Hebrew cosmogony; general views of nature contained in the Hebrew scriptures; the desolate void; days of creation; atmosphere; dry land; vegetation; luminaries; lower and higher animals; unity and antiquity of man; etc.
