Histoire du Cardinal Alberoni

[DE MISSY], Mr. J. R.

Regular price $100.00 Sale

The author [De Missy] was born in France in 1686 to a Protestant family which was ruined by the Edict of Nantes. He fled to Holland when he was 18 and opened a private school. After the success of this publication, [De Missy] shut down his school and dedicated his life to writing. The subject of this successful biography is Giulio Alberoni (1664-1752), an ambitious Italian who became prime minister of Spain in 1716. His capture of Cagliari and other conquests led to an outcry in Europe against his violation of the rights of nations. Alberoni was removed from office and banished from Spain. Piracy has clouded the origins of this edition, and it is not listed in the NUC.
