The "Canada Temperance Advocate" was a widely circulated paper edited by John Dougall (1808-1886), an officer of the Montreal Temperance Society. Dougall edited the Advocate for about two decades from 1835. Under his leadership, circulation soared to 8,000 in 1841 and free copies were sent out to politicians, teachers and ministers. In print until 1854, the Advocate published temperance ideology, news, moralistic fiction, verse and music. Articles include "To Church Members who sell Strong Drink", "War" [which they were against], "The Wife of the Intemperate", etc.
