Pepys speaks of Lord Vaughan as "one of the lewdest fellows of the age, worse than Sir Charles Sedley" (DNB). That was saying a great deal, for some of Sedley's poetry is raunchy indeed. The 5th Baronet, Sir Charles Sedley (1639-1701) was a politican, dramatist and famed wit of his day. His poetry explores both satrie and amorous topics.
