Cornelius Warren ("Chip") Grafton (1909 – 1982) took the title of this book, his second mystery novel, from a nursery rhyme, The Old Woman and Her Pig. The hero of this story, lawyer Gilmore Henry, also appeared in his first tale, The rat began to gnaw the rope. Grafton's daughter Sue (1940–2017) also became a crime writer and is famous for her "Alphabet Series" of crime novels.
