Cornelius Warren ("Chip") Grafton (1909 – 1982) took the title of this book, his first mystery novel, from a nursery rhyme, The Old Woman and Her Pig. The hero of this story, lawyer Gilmore Henry, also appears in his next tale, The Rope Began to Hang the Butcher. Grafton's daughter Sue (1940–2017) also became a crime writer and is famous for her "Alphabet Series" of crime novels.
