Rear pencil inscription states the sitter is John Singleton Copley, Lord Lyndhurst (1772-1863), British politician who was three times Lord Chancellor, supported Jewish Emancipation in 1858, and advocated women's rights in divorce. John Jabez Edwin Paisley Mayall (1813 – 1901) was an English photographer who in 1860 took the first carte-de-visite photographs of Queen Victoria. He also photographed other famous people such as Charles Dickens and Karl Marx.
