Rear pencil inscription states the sitter is John Singleton Copley, Lord Lyndhurst (1772-1863), British politician who was three times Lord Chancellor, supported Jewish Emancipation in 1858, and advocated women's rights in divorce. John Jabez Edwin Paisley Mayall (1813 1901) was an English photographer who in 1860 took the first carte-de-visite photographs of Queen Victoria. He also photographed other famous people such as Charles Dickens and Karl Marx.
