The authors discuss Joan of Arc, Florence Nightingale, Laura Secord, Catharine Parr Trail, Helen Keller, Edith Cavell, Pauline Johnson and others. 15 of the 21 biographies are of Canadians. Some of these women are less well known today, such as Ada May Courtice, founder of the Home and School movement, and Margaret Polson Murray, founder of the Imperial Order Daughters of the Empire. Montgomery, by far the best known of the three authors, produced the chapters on Joan of Arc, Florence Nightingale and Mary Slessor, but she was not particularly interested in this type of writing, preferring to spend time producing fiction.
