WENTWORTH, Sir John, Bart.
Document appointing Andrew Butler a Lieutenant in the Second Battalion of Shelborne Militia, Nova Scotia. Shelburne militia would have been composed of all able-bodied male residents between the ages of 16 and 60, and its primary function was the defense and security of the province. While typically engaged in annual musters and drills in peacetime, the militia could be mobilized in times of emergency or war. Born in Portsmouth, New Hampshire and educated at Harvard, Wentworth (1727-1820) was appointed Governor in 1766. Forced as a Loyalist to flee to Halifax in 1776, he became Lieutenant Governor of Nova Scotia from 1792 to 1808. Bulkeley (1761-96) was a civil servant and political figure in Nova Scotia. He represented Sydney County in the Nova Scotia House of Assembly from 1786 to 1793 and Halifax County from 1793 to 1796. He succeeded his own father, Richard Bulkeley, in the Provincial Secretary position.
