Charles Reid (1837-1929) was one of the foremost commercial photographers in Scotland, pioneering the photography of livestock in a time period when long exposures made the process difficult. Reid set up a studio on Shand Street, Wishaw in about 1876 but travelled extensively in Britain, photographing the race horses and breeding stock of the landed gentry. In this case, however, he took a portrait of a fashionable young woman.
