Edmund Burke, Irish statesman, author, orator, political theorist and philosopher, moved to England and served for many years in the House of Commons as a Whig. He is mainly remembered for his support for the American Revolutionaries and his lack of support for the French ones. The latter led to his becoming the leading figure in the conservative faction of the Whig party, the "Old Whigs," as opposed to the pro French Revolution "New Whigs" led by Charles James Fox. Burke was admired by both conservatives and liberals in the 19th century and is often considered the founder of both modern conservatism and classical liberalism. Introduction in Vol. I by Hon. William Glenholme Falconbridge, Chief Justice of the King's Bench, Ontario.
