Joseph McCoy (1837-1915) was a cattle baron, influential in shaping the American cattle industry in the 19th century. Viewing the livestock industry from a national perspective, he recognized the need for better contacts between southwestern ranchers and their eastern markets. This memoir illustrates what is was really like to drive cattle, ship them from a depot, supply the "Indians" with beef, live with cowboys, brand cattle, survive a stampede, blackmail railroad officials, and other wild west activities.
