Lindsay's most popular and influential novel influenced C. S. Lewis's Space Trilogy. Yet the book sold poorly during Lindsay's lifetime. Not even his first publisher saw its value immediately; in fact, Methuen only agreed to publish it if Lindsay cut 15,000 words. But, since the author's death in 1945, the book has been republished many times and reviewers consider it to be "a work of genius." The five-page review by Lindsay's friend E. H. Visiak first appeared in the March 30, 1940 edition of "Notes And Queries."
