OSBORN, Lieut. Sherard
Osborn was commander of the H.M.S. Pioneer on Horatio Austin's Franklin Search Expedition. This expedition proved that Franklin's ships had not been lost in Baffin Bay but instead wintered at Beechey Island in 1845-46. Much of the success of this voyage was due to the steam tenders which opened new prospects for Arctic navigation; in his Preface Osborn refers to the expedition as "the first and severe trial of steam in the Arctic regions (p. vi)." The voyage visited Baffin Bay, Lancaster Sound, Barrow Strait, then wintered at Griffith Island before returning. Notes on West Greenland "Eskimos," the ice of northern Baffin Bay, hunting, clothing, food, equipment, carrier pigeons, sledge journeys, recreation. Dedication to Lady Franklin. Osborn went on to become a distinguished rear admiral in the British navy and author of many other important Arctic books. Arctic Bib. 12899. Sabin 57760. TPL 3193. Abbey Travel 640. Howgego O-5.
