The steamer Wenonah, seen moored in one photo, was built in 1886 by A. P. Cockburn of the Muskoka Navigation Company to ply the Magnetawan River. At 94.6 ft in length by 18 in beam and weighing 89.9 tons, it was the longest and one of the largest steamers to ever run on that river. Popular with the travelling public, the boat was commanded by Capt. John Templeman of Burks Falls. It first passed through the Magnetawan lock on July 8, 1886 on the way to Ahmic Harbour. The village of Ahmic Harbour boasted a church, planing mill, a few shops and a hotel but its lack of water power and proximity to the neighbourng vllage of Duchurch impeded its development. Muskoka Navigation decided to sells its assets on the Magnetawan in 1905. The Wenonah was remodeled into a towboat by a competitor and sank in 1908. Apparently sparks from the firebox ignited cordwood being used for fuel.
