William H. Partridge (1858-1939) operated a Portland, Ore. photography studio with his brother Edward between 1885 and 1889. This studio was apparently a western office of the Partridge Photo Co. of Boston, Mass. William Partridge probably took most of the Alaska views during the summer of 1886 when he journeyed on the steam boat Ancon. With the discovery of gold nearby in 1880, Juneau was born. But, as this photo shows, the new community consisted mainly of shacks for some time.
