Hereward was a Saxon nobleman, leader of local resistance to the Norman Conquest. Kingsley's novel is a romantic account of Hereward's exploits, making him the son of Earl Leofric of Mercia and ancestor of the Victorian-era Wake family. Interestingly, since 1865 the Wakes of Northamptonshire have named their sons Hereward.
