Early English translations of "Voyage au Centre de la Terre" generally added "A" in front of the title. Oddly, Verne's Professor "Lidenbrock" becomes "Von Hardwigg" and there are other changes from the original French. Despite oddities in the translation, "Journey to the Centre of the Earth" remains one of the greatest adventure stories of all time. Riou's illustrations enter into the spirit of the text, including creepy dark caverns, a mushroom forest, prehistoric animals, a sea monster, a plain of bones, "human" remains, and so on. A modern adult is overwhelmed by the amount of scientific knowledge in Verne's head, as well as his fertile imagintion.
