Stevenson's famous adventure novel was first written as a serial for the magazine Young Folks. Though meant for adolescents, it has been appreciated by generations of adults. Set in Scotland just after the Jacobite rebellion, the story is narrated by the orphaned teenager, David Balfour, whose uncle tries to sell him to a plantation in the Carolinas. Readers will find the included map of great assistance in tracing Davie's escape. Joseph Zaehnsdorf (1816 – 1886) was an Austrian bookbinder who arrived in London in 1837 and became a British subject in 1855. His attractive bindings are still sought by collectors. His son, Joseph William Zaehnsdorf, took over his business and wrote The Art of Bookbinding: a practical treatise.
