Bastian was one of the founders of English neurology. He is remembered for "Bastian's Law" - transvers lesion of the spinal cord above the lumbar enlargement results in abolition of the tendon reflexes of the lower extremities. In 1868, he became assistant physician to the National Hospital for the Paralysed and Epileptic, then full physician in 1887. G&M 3942.
