Notmans 1897 photograph of a woman standing in the hollow of the great cedar tree in Stanley Park, Vancouver, is just one of many famous images of the same tree. All manner of objects and beasts have been photographed in its belly, including a horse-drawn cart, an early automobile, and an elephant. Although the hollow tree was slated for removal in 2006 after being badly damaged by a severe windstorm, a group of concerned citizens raised funds to stabilize it. The great cedar still stands today.
