SCHMIDT, Dr. Julius; SAVAGE, A. D. (trans.); MEYE, Heinrich (illus.)

Copán is an archaeological site of the Maya cvilization in Copán Department of western Honduras. Quiriguá is an ancient Maya archaeological site in the department of Izabal in southeastern Guatemala. Schmidt and Meye apparently investigated these sites in 1877 and first published an account of their expedition the following year. Meye's contribution was enitrely as an artist. This folio was also issued in German by Asher of Berlin and in an English-language edition in London. This New York edition is likely just the sheets of the English edition with a cancel title page. Whether the plates are particularly well executed or detailed is a matter of opinion and the main interest here is in the early date of creation and rarity. Preface by Alphons Stübel, German naturalist and geologist. Winsor I:194. Bernal 7929.
