The Mammoth Cheese of Perth, Lanark County, Ontario was featured at the Columbian Exposition in Chicago in 1893. Twelve Lanark cheese makers donated a day's milk to the project. The 10,000 cows involved must have been proud. The result was 6 ft high and 28 ft in circumference. Why not? How could anyone ever have enough cheese? Unfortunately, at 22,000 lbs, the "mammoth" crashed through the floor of the exhibition hall while being moved into its display space. The resulting mess was written about more than any other exhibit at the fair. Now only a slice remains, on permanent display at the Perth Museum along with its bronze medal. One wonders what took the gold.
