Original drawings and paintings assocated with the voyages of Captain James Cook. The famous explorer made three voyages to the Pacific Ocean, during which he achieved the first recorded European contact with the eastern coastline of Australia and the Hawaiian Islands, and the first recorded circumnavigation of New Zealand. There were a number of artists on board. Sydney Parkinson was heavily involved in documenting the botanists' findings, completing 264 drawings before his death near the end of the first voyage. His illustrations were of immense scientific value to British botanists. Cook's second expedition included William Hodges, who produced notable landscape paintings of Tahiti, Easter Island, and other locations.
