Title continues: "To Which is Added, The Mission, An Original Poem, With Copious Notes. Also, A Brief Account of Missionary Societies, And much interesting Information on Missions in Genera." Joshua Marsden was one of five missionaries sent by the English Methodist Church to the Maritime colonies of Canada. He remained there from 1799 to 1807, travelling by water and horseback to the remotest districts. Later he visited Bermuda (the Somers Islands) and he gives an account of slavery there from an Abolitionist viewpoint. While on his return trip from Bermuda to England, he was detained in New York, an experience which allowed him to give an account of American preparations for the War of 1812.
