Leo R. Schidlof (1886 - 1966) was an Austrian art dealer and collector who operated art auction houses in Vienna and Paris. His special interest was miniature painting and he became a leading expert in the field, producing this four-volume lexicon of European miniature painters from the 16th to the 19th centuries. His introduction explains the uses and styles of miniature portraits, ending with an account of the artists' hopeless struggle against the new medium of photography.
