Gabriel Francois, Abbe Coyer, was a French man of letters and a rather worldly cleric born in 1707. He studied humanities and philosophy in the Society of Jesus until he left the order in1736. His many works include a history of the Polish king Jan Sobieski, travelogues of Holland and Italy, a study of ancient religions, and a popular attack on the guild system. His work "La Noblesse commercante" precipietated a huge pamphlet war on the question of whether the legal impediments to noblemen engaging in trade should be lifted.
