Malouf's semi-autobiographical first novel was was selected by the Brisbane City Council in 2004 as the joint-winner of the annual "One Book One Brisbane" competition to find the book that best represents that city. His main characters, Dante and Johnno, are unlikely childhood friends growing up in the bustle of World War II-era Brisbane. In less than two-hundred pages, Malouf manages to capture the coming-of-age angst of the entire Australian post-war generation. A touching tale by Australia's most acclaimed contemporary writer.
