Charles Lanman was a prolific American author, government official, artist, librarian, and explorer. His tours throughout the United States and Canada resulted in letters, essays, and periodical articles, assembled into this volume among others. He describes the Mississippi River, St. Louis, Lake Winnipeg, Lake Superior, Sault Saint Marie, Mackinaw, the Catskills, Adirondacs, Lake Champlain, Montreal, Quebec, the Saguenay, "Esquimaux" of Labrador, the Cherokees and their customs, the Bay of Fundy, Miramichi, Gaspé, Florida, Alabama, New Orleans, rattlesnakes, plantation customs, fishing, and Indian legends, plus much more. Correspondence with his friend Washington Irving is reproduced in the Preface.

Spines and edges faded, corners bumped, small tears in spine ends, small holes in vol. I front board. Former owners' labels on front pastedowns. Part of front free endpaper in vol. 1 missing. Small red ink notations on both front free endpapers.
