Ephraim George Squier (1821 1888) was appointed special American chargé d'affaires to all the Central American states in 1849, and negotiated treaties with Nicaragua, Honduras, and San Salvador. In 1853 he made a second visit to Central America to examine a line for a projected interoceanic railroad and to make further study of the archaeology of the country. His various researches supplied him with the information to publish this general work on Nicaragua, describing its climate, population, agriculture, mineral production, history, antiquities, and cities, including Managua, the capital. In part II, he suggests the commericial and political aspects of an interoceanic canal (eventually built in Panama) as well as the aboriginal nations of Nicaragua and its political history.
