The American author Nathaniel Parker Willis worked with several notable American writers including Edgar Allan Poe and Henry Wadsworth Longfellow as well as writing the text to go along with Bartlett's prints. Although largely forgotten, he was the highest-paid magazine writer of his day. This set lacks Bartlett's illustrations, but does have the publisher's striking full leather gift binding. The gilt design depicts native people peering at a small group of settlers standing by their canoe.
