Written by William Cusack Smith (1766-1836), Irish politician and judge, early proponent of Catholic emancipation. He supported the Act of Union following the Rebellion of 1798 on the grounds that it would end the exclusion of Catholics from power. Here he argues against Foster's claim that the economist Adam Smith was against the idea of union. Smith was MP for Donegal at the time of publication.
