About four years after the appearance of his famous Gazetteer, W. H. Smith published this more elaborate work. It contains 10 fold-out county maps and one large map of Canada West as a whole. The text describes Canada West's discovery, early settlement, population, resources, trade, commerce, and climate. Perhaps of most use to today's readers, however, is the description of counties and towns. Our very own London, for example, is "finely situated at the junction of the north and east branches of the River Thames, its site is elevated, and it is consequently dry and healthy" (vol. I, p. 90).
