First published in 1876, this fanciful eight-canto poem describes the sea voyage of a bellman, boots, bonnet maker, barrister, broker, billiard marker, banker, beaver, baker, and butcher on a search for the elusive snark. Here the epic is illustrated by Mervyn Peake, who is said to have been paid only £ 5 for his work. If so, it seems a pity, for Peake's goofy pictures are the perfect accompaniment to Carroll's nonsense.
