As noted on the title page, the author worked at the Hôpital Salpêtrière from 1895. He was one of the pioneers in the study of localisation of function in the brain. "Avec la collaboration de Madame Dejerine-Klumpke." Augusta Marie Klumpke, Dejerine's wife from 1888, studied medicine in Paris and in 1887 and was the first woman to become "interne des hôpitaux."
