TpL 4011. Dionne 1446. Gagnon I-3013. Sabin 70733. Howes R245. Amusing account of a tour through Canada and the US on a wager that the author could not survive purely on the proceeds of an amateur theatrical troupe which he was to assemble for his wager. Biting comments about many cities: New York: "Anything more disgusting than the state of the streets I never saw." Portland, Maine: "a dreadfully dismal, unfinished sea-port town." Belleville: "a large portion was burnt down, and the blackened ruins still stand, and seem likely to stand, unless the wind blows them down, which is also likely." Niagara Falls: "One day at Niagara is the same as another, weather permittting, unless you tumble in."
