The author toured the US with members of the Society for the improvement of Prison Discipline and the Reformation of Juvenile Offenders to report on prison conditions in the US. He also had close contact with US abolitionists and helped form the Anti-Slavery League. While much of the text is concerned with prison and race issues, he also wrote on a wide variety of other social and economic topics, including trade unions, a deaf and dumb asylum in Hartford, preacher salaries, law-suits, Washington D.C., speeches in Congress, mineral springs, a steamboat on the Ohio, Liberia, Cincinnati, infant schools, Cherokee Chiefs, and much more. Howes A8. Sabin 45.
