Wait. Benjamin Wait (1813-1895), rebel, was born in Markham Township, Upper Canada. His participation in the rebellion of 1837-38 led to a death sentence, commuted to transportation for life to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania), where he arrived in 1839. Due to the efforts of his wife, he received a pardon in 1842, but he had already escaped, eventually reaching the United States.He spent the rest of his life in New York and Michigan.
