Thomas Gray (1716 – 1771), English poet and professor at Pembroke College, Cambridge, is best known for his Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard (p. 124). The English clergyman and man of letters John Mitford (1781-1859) had contemplated an edition of Thomas Gray's Works since 1811; in 1814 he produced this first accurate edition of Gray's poems, complete with notes, a biography, and a critical essay. It would be the first of many editions produced by Mitford over the years.
