Written anonymously by Canadian author and politician, Thomas Chandler Haliburton (1796-1865), the book continues the ideas and opinions of the fictional Sam Slick, a character Haliburton first introduced in The Clockmaker (1836) as a vehicle for satirical commentary on Canadian and American culture. The character and books which feature Sam Slick were successfully serialized in the Novascotian and found popularity the United States and Britain.
