The authorship of this volume is attributed to Henry Rowe Schoolcraft (1793 1864), American geographer, geologist, and ethnologist, noted for his early studies of Native American cultures. His wife was Jane Johnston, daughter of a prominent Scotch-Irish fur trader and an Ojibwa mother; Jane taught her husband the Ojibwe language and much about her mother's culture. This book was originally issued 1844-45, in eight numbers with paper covers bearing the title Onéota, or The red race of America.
