This collaborative history was begun by Robert Watson (ca.1730–1781), Scottish minister and academic, but edited and completed by William Thomson (1746-1817) after Watson's death. The publication of this work established Thomson's literary reputation, and he went on to publish numerous pamphlets, biographies, memoirs, and treatises. The weak King Philip III of Spain (ruled 1598 -1621) may seem a rather uninteresting historical subject, but his significance lies in the fact that Spain's decline as a world power began in his reign.
