Catharine Parr Traill (1802-1899) was one of the literary Strickland sisters, who also included Agnes, Jane Margaret, Elizabeth and Susanna. Catharine was a children's author before emigrating with her husband (a retired Napoleonic War soldier) to Upper Canada. Here she wrote many Canadian novels and settlers' guides. The Backwoods of Canada includes much useful and interesting information on homemaking in pioneer Canada, including pioneer recipes.
