The lives of the most famous philosophers of antiquity by the epicurean philosopher Diogenes Laertius (fl. c. AD 222-235) of whom very little is known. Portrait plates are not signed but may also be the work of Christian Friedrich Fritzsch (c. 1719-1774), who often illustrated the work of Amsterdam publishers. Probably translated into French by Jacques-Georges de Chauffepié (1702-1786). French text.

2 vols. of 3: xxxv, 345; [6], 447 p. 17 cm. 28 full page engravings and 4 vignettes as well as various headpieces at chapter beginnings. Engravings include two frontispieces by Christian Friedrich Fritzsch. Full mottled leather with red text block edges. Gold impressing on spines. Marbled endpapers and black and red lettering on title pages. Spine ends chipped and corners and edges worn. Front free endpaper missing in vol. 1. Vol. 1 has chip in p. 13 not affecting text, tears in pp. 256 & 251, ink marks rear endpaper. Other small ink marks and tiny tears in both volumes including ink notation on title page of vol. 1.
