Gilbert Burnet (1643-1715) was Bishop of Sarum, also known as Salisbury or New Sarum. He was highly respected as a cleric, a preacher, and an academic, as well as a writer and historian. Always closely associated with the Whig party, he was one of the few close friends in whom King William III confided, hence the dedication to the king in this volume.
