Engraved frontispiece, author's portrait on title page, head and tail pieces, decorated initials in each volume. Full leather with gilt impressing. All edges red. Attractive marbled endpapers. Spine labels missing or worn. Some chipped spine ends, loose hinges, wear to edges and corners. Each volume has round armorial bookplate of James Hope on front pastedown as well as reference library label below. Vol. 1 has ink signature at top of title page, vol. 3 has some soiling to top corners of front endpages, and pp. up to 12 in vol. 7 are detached but present. Vol. 7 has dark stains on pp. 58-59, 88-89, 122-123, 130-131, 182-183, and D-E of index from small pieces of paper left between pages, affecting top centre only.
