Vol. I engraving states Printed for John Bell near Exeter Exchange, London, May 27th, 1779. Vol. II engraving states London, Printed for John Bell at the British Library Strand Sept. 23, 1780. Full leather. Gilt trim and burgundy labels on spines. Front pastedowns have bookplates of Thomas Hutchinson, Morpeth. Vol. I front free endpaper has written notation "The Life of Savage is by Dr. Samuel Johnson" and following leaf has illustration of Johnson pasted on. Three volumes have scuffing to boards except vol. II. Corners lightly bumped with top corners worn vol. III. Some spotting to lower edges of text blocks on vols. I & IV. Ink mark on top edge of text block vol. II. Hinges beginning to crack slightly.
