An American printing to coincide with a performance of The Natural Son at the Boston Theatre. Richard Cumberland (1732-1811) was a dramatist who wrote 54 plays as well as poetry, essays, and novels. Cumberland was also a diplomat undertaking various missions to Spain, Ireland, and Nova Scotia, Canada. The Natural Son was first published in 1785, after being staged initially at the Drury Lane Theatre at the end of 1784. The play features a character from Cumberland's previously popular play, The West Indian (1771).
