Thomas Otway (1652-1685) was a British playwright under King Charles II. Venice Preserv'd, originally published in 1682, is a classic Restoration Tragedy with many characteristics of the Gothic Romance, including a allegorical reference to the Gunpowder Plot. The play was also well known at the time and remembered for the melodramatic portrayal of Belvidera, a well respected character and role for women actresses, newly admitted to the stage during the Restoration.
