Robert Ainsworth was master of 'a considerable boarding-school' but gave that up after acquiring a moderate fortune. About 1714, a proposal was made to some of the leading London booksellers to compete a new English and Latin Dictionary. Ainsworth was engaged to carry out the work but needed assistance due to his advanced age and an eye disorder. Nevertheless, the first edition appeared in 1736 and long remained the best Latin-English Dictionary. Thomas Morell was a classical scholar and librettist.
